Easter 2027 falls on 26–29 March. Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, and Czech schoolchildren already have the day off from Thursday 25 March. For the Moravian Karst, this means two things:
- The caves are still running on their March schedule. There are only a few tours a day, and they’re normally closed on Mondays. On Easter Monday 2026, however, every cave except Punkva Cave (Punkevní jeskyně), which opens on Mondays in April too, exceptionally stayed open all day. Buy tickets in advance.
- Nature is at its best. Spring snowflakes and pasque flowers are in bloom, and the streams carry more water than at any other time of year.
Book accommodation for the long weekend well ahead — it’s the first bank holiday weekend of spring.

Easter 2027 calendar

| Good Friday | 26 Mar | public holiday, long weekend starts |
| Holy Saturday | 27 Mar | |

Families with schoolchildren get five consecutive days off. If you can, travel on Thursday or Friday morning — the caves tend to be busiest at weekends.
Cave opening hours in March
The whole of Easter 2027 falls in March, when the caves operate on reduced hours. The Czech Cave Administration (Správa jeskyní ČR) hasn’t yet published the 2027 opening hours. Here’s the March 2026 schedule, which gives a good indication for planning:
| Cave | March (Tue–Sun) | Monday |
|---|---|---|
| Punkva Cave (Punkevní jeskyně) | 8:40 am–2:00 pm | closed |
| Kateřina Cave (Kateřinská jeskyně) | tours at 10:00 am, 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm | closed |
| Balcarka Cave | tours at 9:00 am, 11:00 am and 1:40 pm | closed |
| Sloup-Šošůvka Caves (Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně) | tours at 10:00 am, 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm | closed |
| Výpustek Cave | tours at 10:00 am, 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm | closed |
Easter Monday. In 2026 this fell on 6 April. Kateřina Cave, Balcarka, Sloup-Šošůvka Caves and Výpustek were all exceptionally open all day, even though they’re normally closed on Mondays. Punkva Cave opens on Mondays in April anyway. Whether the same applies on 29 March 2027 will be confirmed on each cave’s website under “Opening hours” in the exceptions list.
What this means in practice: Kateřina Cave, Balcarka, Výpustek and the Sloup-Šošůvka Caves only run three tours a day in March, and Easter Saturday fills up fast. Punkva Cave is only open until 2:00 pm in March, not until 4:00 pm as from April onwards — so if you arrive after lunch, you’ll be out of luck.
You’ll find prices for all the tours in the cave price list, and instructions on how to buy tickets online in Tickets and bookings. We’ll update this article with the 2027 opening hours as soon as the Cave Administration publishes them.
Where to go beyond the caves
Late March is the best time of year for exploring the countryside in the Karst. The summer crowds haven’t arrived yet, the streams are at their fullest, and the first flowers are blooming.
- Rakovec Valley for spring snowflakes. A nature trail runs from Jedovnice along the Rakovec stream, where hundreds of thousands of spring snowflakes bloom in springtime. Full details in Moravian Karst without the crowds.
- Rudice Sinkhole (Rudické propadání). After the thaw, the Jedovnice stream carries more water than at any other time of year, making the sinkhole at its most impressive.
- Macocha Abyss (Propast Macocha). Both viewing platforms are free and need no booking. The cable car up to Macocha runs again from March after its winter break.
- Pustý žleb gorge. Walk from Sloup to Skalní Mlýn in the morning, before the crowds build up around the caves.
- Pasque flowers on the steppes in the south of the Karst. They bloom in March and April — where to find them is covered in Flora of the Moravian Karst.
A word of warning on the weather: the northern part of the Karst around Sloup can still have snow lying at the end of March, while the south tends to be a few weeks ahead. More on spring in the Karst in The Moravian Karst in spring.
Easter in Křtiny
Křtiny is one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in Moravia. The Baroque Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary, designed by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel, is a living church even at Easter, not a museum. If you’d like to experience Easter services in one of the region’s most beautiful Baroque churches, the programme is published on the pilgrimage site’s website, pmkrtiny.cz.

Tips for Easter in the Karst
- Buy tickets the moment they go on sale. Most caves only run three tours a day in March, and everyone wants to visit at Easter. See Tickets and bookings for how to do it.
- Visit Punkva Cave in the morning. It only stays open until 2:00 pm in March.
- Double-check opening hours for Easter Monday. Each cave publishes its own exceptions on its website.
