How to choose family accommodation

Location. The Moravian Karst is small — from Jedovnice you can drive to Skalní Mlýn or Sloup in about 15 to 20 minutes. With children, though, every journey you can shave off counts. Most places are within 20 minutes of the heart of the Karst: Jedovnice, Vilémovice or Ostrov u Macochy. If you want to be as close as possible to the Punkva Caves (Punkevní jeskyně) and Kateřinská Cave, stay at Skalní Mlýn or in Blansko. We compare the different areas in detail in our article Where to stay in the Moravian Karst.

A backup plan for rainy days. A pool or kids’ club at the hotel can save an afternoon when there’s nothing to do outside. More tips are in our article Moravian Karst in the rain.

Playground and garden. After an hour in a cave, children need to run around. A playground right at your accommodation means parents get to sit down in peace come evening.

Kitchen. For a week with small children, a self-catering apartment is often more comfortable than a hotel. Breakfast and dinner on your schedule, not the restaurant’s.

Ratings given for each listing are from Booking.com as of 12 October 2026 (guest score out of 10 and number of reviews). We checked the playground, kids’ club and pool details in the accommodation description and facilities on Booking on the same date. We don’t list prices, as these change depending on dates.

Tips for a stay with children

  1. One cave a day is plenty. With small children, trying to fit in more than one cave a day mostly means queuing and tired tantrums. We cover how to plan your days in our itinerary with children.
  2. Start with Kateřinská Cave. It has no narrow passages or crawling, and the tour is short. Children under 3 go free, and there’s a family ticket. Note that it’s closed in December, January and February. All the cave prices are listed in our price guide.
  3. You can’t take a pushchair into the caves. Plan to bring a baby carrier instead. You can take a pushchair through the Pustý žleb gorge and up to the Upper Bridge above the Macocha Abyss. More in our article Moravian Karst without barriers.
  4. Pack a jumper, even in summer. The caves stay cold all year round.
  5. Book your Punkva Caves tickets in advance. With children, waiting around for a free slot is the worst part. Here’s how in our article Tickets and bookings.
  6. Book your summer accommodation early. Family rooms are scarce across the Karst, and they’re the first thing to go in July and August.

More tips for families: nature trails with children, accommodation with a pool and spa, and the whole Karst on one page in our Moravian Karst guide.
