Rain is less of a problem in the Moravian Karst than you might think. The best plan for a wet day is the caves themselves: underground it is around 7–10 °C all year round, whatever the weather is doing. Between tours, you can shelter in the Moravian Karst Nature House at Skalní Mlýn (150 Kč, about €6 — a rough guide only, as exchange rates fluctuate; open daily 9am–4pm) or the Blansko Regional Museum at Blansko Chateau (guided tour 100 Kč, about €4; closed on Mondays). Children will love the new indoor pool in Blansko, with its children’s pool and whirlpool. And the Baroque church in Křtiny is open every day, free of charge.

If you’re heading to the Karst for a weekend and the forecast says rain, there’s no need to cancel anything. Most of the best sights are underground anyway. It just helps to have a few places up your sleeve where you can shelter between tours.
1. The caves: it never rains underground
Every cave stays at almost the same temperature all year round, around 7–10 °C. Whether it’s pouring outside or not, it’s the same down below. Just bring a warmer layer and sturdy shoes, as the paths to the caves get slippery after rain.
- Punkva Caves (Punkevní jeskyně), with a boat trip along the underground river. They are the busiest of all, so book your tickets online in advance.
- Kateřinská Cave (Kateřinská jeskyně), home to the largest underground chamber in the Czech Republic. Note that it is closed in January, February and December, and closed on Mondays in October.
- Sloup-Šošůvka Caves (Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně) and Balcarka Cave (Balcarka), where it tends to be quieter.
- Výpustek Cave (Výpustek) near Křtiny, where nature meets history, from prehistoric times to the Cold War.
On a rainy day you can easily plan two caves. You get a 20% discount on the second one, unless it’s the Punkva Caves. You can find out how the discount works in the cave price list.
2. Moravian Karst Nature House at Skalní Mlýn
It stands right at Skalní Mlýn, the starting point for the walk to the Punkva Caves and the cable car up to the Macocha Abyss. That makes it an ideal spot to wait for your tour.
Inside is an interactive exhibition on how the Karst was formed and what lives there. Depending on demand, a 25-minute 3D film, Realm of Petrified Time (Říše zkamenělého času), is shown in the cinema room.
| Admission | Price |
|---|---|
| Adults | 150 Kč |
| Children, students, seniors | 100 Kč |
| Family (2 adults + up to 3 children under 15) | 450 Kč |
| Children under 3 | free |
- Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 9am–4pm.
- Discount: with the tourist MojaKarta, you get 50% off entry to the Nature House.
- Cipher game for children at 50 Kč is played outdoors, so save that one for when the rain eases off.
For more on the surrounding area, see our article on Skalní Mlýn.
3. Blansko Regional Museum at Blansko Chateau
The chateau stands in Blansko, about 10 km from Skalní Mlýn. The museum has six permanent exhibitions. The most interesting ones for visitors to the Karst are:
- Journeys Underground in the Moravian Karst, an exhibition devoted to the caves,
- A Journey into the Prehistory of the Blansko Area, archaeology from the Neanderthals to the first written mention of Blansko, with a detective game for families with children,
- Pictures from Moravian Switzerland, the natural history of the Karst (that’s what the region was called in the 19th century),
- Blansko Art Cast Iron, products of the local ironworks.
On top of that, there are the chateau’s historic interiors and an exhibition called Treasures of the Castles of the Blansko Area. A children’s play room is included in the ticket price.
| Admission to permanent exhibitions | With guide | Without guide |
|---|---|---|
| Adults | 100 Kč (about €4) | 70 Kč (about €2.80) |
| Children 6–15, students, seniors | 50 Kč (about €2) | 35 Kč (about €1.40) |
| Family (2 adults + up to 3 children) | 200 Kč (about €8) | 140 Kč (about €5.60) |
Children under 6 go free.
- April to October: Tuesday to Sunday, 10am–5pm.
- November to March: Tuesday to Saturday, 10am–5pm, closed on Sundays.
- Mondays: closed all year round. Last entry to the permanent exhibitions is at 3.30pm.
- Because of weddings and concerts at the chateau, tour times occasionally change.
What you can see in the exhibitions is described in the article Blansko Chateau and the Museum of the Blansko Region.
4. The new indoor pool in Blansko
In August 2026, Blansko opened a new indoor pool on Ludvík Daněk Sports Island (Mlýnská 2631/15). With children in tow, it’s the surest bet for a whole rainy afternoon.
There is a 25-metre swimming pool with six lanes, a teaching pool with a massage bench and bubble jets, a children’s pool with water features, a paddling pool, a baby pool, a whirlpool and a steam sauna. There is no water slide or aquapark; those belonged to the old complex, which has been demolished. Beware of older websites that still describe it.
| Admission for 60 minutes | Swimming pool | Whole complex |
|---|---|---|
| Adults | 100 Kč (about €4) | 130 Kč (about €5.20) |
| Young people 6–17 | 70 Kč (about €2.80) | 100 Kč (about €4) |
| Seniors, students | 80 Kč (about €3.20) | 100 Kč (about €4) |
| Children under 5 | free | free |
| Family, whole complex | 370 Kč (about €14.80) for 4 people, 440 Kč (about €17.60) for 5 people |
- Opening hours: Monday to Friday 6.00am–9.30pm, weekends and public holidays 7.00am–9.30pm.
- You pay for 60 minutes, and you get a further 15 minutes free for changing. If you overstay, you pay a supplement.
- You can check how busy the swimming lanes are in the e-shop at tsblansko.cz.
5. Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary in Křtiny
Santini’s Baroque church in Křtiny is one of the most beautiful buildings in the region, and you can visit it in any weather.
- Opening hours: daily 7am–7pm, and 7am–5pm from October to April. In winter, access is through the back entrance from the cloisters.
- Admission: free.
- The ossuary is open only on certain days, and guided tours must be booked at least 14 days in advance. Current dates are on pmkrtiny.cz.
- The Výpustek Cave is nearby, so you can combine the two in a single morning.
For more on the village, see our article on Křtiny.
