Kulířov (population around 160) is one of the smallest villages around the Moravian Karst. It sits on flat ground between the karst and the Drahany Highlands, a short distance from Lipovec. It was founded in the 13th century by the lords of Holštejn. During the Second World War, like Senetářov and Krasová, it became part of the Vyškov military training area and its inhabitants were forced to leave. Its oldest monument is the wayside shrine from 1635. The village fair is held around 26 July, the feast day of St Anne, patron saint of the local chapel. A cycle route runs through Kulířov via Holštejn to Sloup. We found no accommodation in the village itself.
QUICK LINKS 👀 What to see · 🚲 Day trips · 🛏️ Where to stay · ❓ FAQ
Kulířov is not a destination you would drive halfway across the country to see. But if you are cycling into the karst from the Vyškov area or from Rozstání, you will pass straight through it. It is worth slowing down at the wayside shrine in the fields, which has stood here since the Thirty Years’ War.
What to see
- The wayside shrine from 1635 stands in the fields beside the track from Kulířov to Panský mlýn (the Lord’s Mill).
- A statue of St John of Nepomuk from 1880 by the upper pond.
- The Chapel of St Anne on the village green. A festive Mass is held there on the day of the village fair.
A little history: The first written record dates from 1349, when the village was called Kylein. It lay deserted from the Hussite Wars and was only resettled in the middle of the 16th century. It then belonged to the Rájec estate of the Rogendorf family and, from 1763, of the Salm family. During the war, the German occupiers evicted the villagers to make room for the expanded military training area. After the war, people returned to damaged homes. To the south-east, Kulířov today borders the Březina military zone. Senetářov, where the returning villagers vowed to build a church, suffered the same fate (Senetářov).
Day trips
- By bike to Sloup. A waymarked cycle route runs via Rozstání, Baldovec and Holštejn to the Sloup-Šošůvka Caves.
- By bike to Macocha. A second route leads via Lipovec to the Macocha Abyss.
- Velká dohoda, with its via ferratas and cable car, is near Lipovec, not far from here.
Events: the firefighters’ ball, the village fair dance, a doubles football-tennis (nohejbal) tournament at the end of the year and, in March, the St Joseph’s table tennis tournament.
