The best balance of weather, open caves and bearable queues is on offer in April–May and September–October. July and August have the longest opening hours, but also the worst queues. In winter (January, February, December), the Kateřinská Cave is closed completely, and the Sloupsko-šošůvské Caves and Balcarka Cave also run on limited schedules — but the Macocha Abyss remains accessible and free year-round.

QUICK LINKS 🌸 Spring · ☀️ Summer · 🍂 Autumn · ❄️ Winter

Spring (April–May) — the best choice

All five caves run a full schedule in April and May, the weather is already pleasant enough for walking through the gorge and out to the abyss, and the summer crowds haven’t arrived yet. The downside: weekends during spring school holidays and public holidays (Easter Monday) tend to be the exception, and queues can build up here too.

Summer (June–August) — the longest opening hours, but also the biggest queues

July and August bring the longest opening hours of any season — the Punkva Caves are open pretty much from morning until late afternoon. At the same time, though, this is peak season: tickets for the Punkva Caves are often sold out by around midday on weekends during these months, and the car park at Skalní Mlýn fills up early in the morning. If you’re visiting in summer, book your tickets in advance and arrive right at opening time.

Summer bonus: June sees the Magical Sounds of Macocha festival — a series of concerts held right inside the caves (see our separate article on the concerts).

Autumn (September–October) — a quieter alternative to spring

Much like spring: the caves still run a full or near-full schedule, the weather tends to be settled, and the autumn colours around the Pustý žleb gorge are an added bonus. Queues drop off noticeably right after the first week of September, once the summer holidays end.

Winter (November–March) — for the patient only

In winter, expect some restrictions:

What does work without restrictions: the Macocha Abyss stays accessible and free all year round — neither of the two viewing platforms requires a booking or a ticket. The Punkva Caves and Výpustek Cave stay open (albeit on reduced hours) throughout winter. If you’re travelling out of season, plan your visit around these two caves plus the abyss.

The reward for a winter visit: minimal queues, a quiet car park, and a different, quieter atmosphere across the region.
