When the kids have had enough of caves after three days in the karst, there are two safe bets within reach, both around 35 km from Blansko. In Vyškov you’ll find DinoPark, with more than a hundred dinosaurs, linked to Zoopark Vyškov, which keeps mainly domestic and farm animals from around the world. One ticket covers both: adults pay 350 Kč (approx. €14) — an indicative conversion only, as exchange rates fluctuate — and children aged 3 to 14 pay 240 Kč. From Jedovnice it’s only about 24 km to Vyškov. West of the karst stands the Gothic Pernštejn Castle, one of the most important castles in Moravia. It offers a shortened tour for children who can’t manage a long visit and, in summer, a tour for the youngest visitors called “The White Lady Has Gone Missing”. Both places are closed in winter.
QUICK LINKS 🦖 DinoPark and Zoopark Vyškov · 🏰 Pernštejn Castle · 🗺️ How to combine them with the karst · ❓ FAQ
The Moravian Karst is brilliant for children, but after a few days the caves, gorges and museums start to blur into one another. Here are two trips beyond the karst that you can fit into a single day, travel included, and that keep children entertained in a different way: dinosaurs and animals to stroke, or a proper castle with towers, bridges and a white lady.
DinoPark and Zoopark Vyškov
How it works: entry is only through the zoo in the centre of Vyškov (Cukrovarská 9). From there, a little train called the DinoExpres takes you to DinoPark. There is no separate entrance to DinoPark. One ticket covers both the zoo and DinoPark, and there is no time limit on your visit.
DinoPark: over 100 dinosaurs, some robotic and some static, with sound effects, set in a shady woodland park. You’ll also find a 4D cinema, a large playground, a palaeontology playground, a crashed aeroplane and, on hot days, misting trees. A walking robotic stegosaurus sets off on strolls at the top of every hour from 10 am to 5 pm at weekends, and at 11 am, 2 pm, 4 pm and 5 pm on weekdays. The ticket price includes the DinoExpres ride, the 4D cinema and the glasses. Only a few attractions cost extra, such as the VR experience or the rocking dinosaur.
The zoo: it keeps mainly domestic and farm breeds from around the world. The biggest draw is Grandmother’s Farmyard (Babiččin dvoreček), where you walk right among the animals and children can stroke them. The zoo began in 1965 as a small petting corner.
| Admission (DinoPark + zoo) | |
|---|---|
| Adults | 350 Kč (approx. €14) |
| Children aged 3–14, students, seniors over 65 | 240 Kč (approx. €9.60) |
| Children under 3 | free |
| Dog | 30 Kč (approx. €1.20) |
Card payments are accepted; meal vouchers and benefit cards are not. Tickets can also be bought online.
Opening hours in 2026: daily from 9 am to 6 pm from June to September. In April, May and October it is open only on selected days, mainly weekends and public holidays, and until 5 pm in October. The 2026 season ends on 1 November, and the park is closed from November to March. The operator will publish the exact dates for the next season at dinopark.cz. In October there are also night tours of DinoPark, entered directly at DinoPark rather than through the zoo.
Distance: about 24 km from Jedovnice, just under half an hour by car, and about 35 km from Blansko.
Pernštejn Castle
This Gothic castle, dating from the mid-13th century, stands above the town of Nedvědice, about 35 km west of Blansko. By the 16th century the Lords of Pernštejn had rebuilt it as a stately residence, yet it remained a fortress. In 1645 the Swedes besieged it and the castle held out. With its oriels, wall walks, bridges and towers perched on a rock, Pernštejn is one of the most important castles in Moravia, and it has been a national cultural monument since 1995. It is managed by the National Heritage Institute.
Tours that suit families:
| Tour | Length | Adults | Children aged 6–17 |
|---|---|---|---|
| From the Gothic to the 20th century (the whole palace) | 80 min | 260 Kč | 80 Kč |
| Shortened tour (tower, first floor, library) | 50 min | 220 Kč | 70 Kč |
| Castle courtyard, unguided | at your own pace | 60 Kč | 60 Kč |
Children under 5 enter free. The National Heritage Institute specifically recommends the shortened tour for families with children who can’t manage a longer visit. In July and August there is also an interactive tour, “The White Lady Has Gone Missing”, for children aged 4 to 6, in which the children hunt for clues with a guide. Booking is essential for this one. For the other tours booking isn’t compulsory, but it’s worth doing in summer.
Below the castle is a restored manorial garden, which you can walk around separately.
Opening hours: the 2026 season ends on 1 November, and in October the castle is open only at weekends and on 28 October. In winter it is closed. Tour dates and bookings are at hrad-pernstejn.cz.
How to combine them with the karst
- Vyškov works well if you’re staying in Jedovnice or in the south of the karst. Dinosaurs and the zoo in the morning, then back for a swim at Olšovec in the afternoon.
- Pernštejn works well if you’re staying in Blansko or in the north of the karst. On the way back you can drive via Boskovice or Rudka with the Blaník Knights Cave.
- For your itinerary: both trips make a good fallback day in the itinerary for families with children or the week-long itinerary, for instance when the caves are sold out.
- For little ones in the karst, see our articles Educational trails for children and Krasík the Snail.
