Sloup is the best base in the northern Moravian Karst. The Sloup-Šošůvka Caves (Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně) are right on your doorstep, the Pustý žleb gorge starts just past the village, and in the evening you’ll find a calm here that you simply won’t get near Skalní Mlýn.

A word of warning when searching on Booking.com: if you simply type “Sloup”, you’ll get results for Sloup in Bohemia near Nový Bor — a different village entirely, nowhere near the Moravian Karst. Search for “Sloup v Moravském krasu” (Sloup in the Moravian Karst) instead, or just use the links in this article.

Why stay in Sloup

Sloup is a small market town of fewer than a thousand residents on the northern edge of the Moravian Karst. Three things make it worth your stay:

Caves and the gorge on foot. The Sloup-Šošůvka Caves are right in the village, including the Kůlna Cave. Just past the village begins Pustý žleb, a car-free road running roughly 8 km to Skalní Mlýn. You can walk it, cycle it, or push a pram along it.

Peace and quiet. The northern part of the karst sees far fewer visitors than the area around the Macocha Abyss and the Punkva Caves (Punkevní jeskyně). From Sloup, it’s about 9 km to the Macocha Abyss.

What’s around. The Podvrší lookout tower near Veselice, the Rasovna sinkholes and a castle ruin near Holštejn, via ferratas in Lipovec, and in summer an outdoor pool right in Sloup itself. You’ll find more on the village in our article on Sloup.
