The Moravian Karst (Moravský kras) has 5 show caves open to the public, and each offers something different. Punkva Caves (Punkevní jeskyně) are the clear first choice for a first visit — a boat trip along the underground river followed by a climb up to the Macocha Abyss, though also the longest queues. Kateřinská Cave is the quickest and easiest (no stairs, no crawling), ideal with small children or when you’re pressed for time. Sloup-Šošůvka Caves (Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně) are the largest and most adventurous, home to the 330-metre Nagel Chasm. Balcarka Cave has the richest stalactite and stalagmite decoration of all five. Výpustek Cave is the only one where prehistoric heritage is joined by Cold War military history. If you only have one day for the Moravian Karst, we recommend combining Punkva Caves (or Kateřinská, if you’re short on time) with the Macocha Abyss.

Which cave suits you?
Visiting for the first time and only want to see one cave? Punkva Caves — this is the best-known and most complete experience in the region: an underground boat trip, a cable-car ride up to the Macocha Abyss, a combination no other cave offers. Do expect queues, especially at weekends in peak season — booking ahead is well worth it.
Travelling with young children or a pushchair? Kateřinská Cave — the generously proportioned, level Main Dome has no stairs or narrow passages, and it’s the shortest tour of all five. We compare it in detail with Balcarka Cave (both now cost the same) in a dedicated article.
Only have half a day, or want to fit in more than one cave? Kateřinská Cave or the short route through Výpustek Cave — both take under 40 minutes. With the 20% combo discount (excluding Punkva Caves), it’s well worth visiting two caves in one day.
Looking for the biggest adventure and the longest route? Sloup-Šošůvka Caves — the long route runs to 1,760 metres and passes both viewing platforms above the ninety-metre Nagel Chasm, one of the largest underground chasms in the Czech Republic. Expect plenty of steps at both viewing platforms.
More interested in history than stalactites? Výpustek Cave — the only cave in the region where prehistoric settlement is paired with a tour of a former Cold War military installation. Full details in a dedicated guide.
Want to see the finest stalactite and stalagmite formations? Balcarka Cave — the Great Dome stretches almost 70 metres and is adorned with thousands of straw and rod-like stalactites, the most colourful and richest decoration of all five caves.
Visiting in winter (January–February)? Anything except Kateřinská Cave — it’s closed entirely throughout January, February and December. The other four operate year-round, though some with reduced hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you fit in more than one cave in a single day? Yes, most visitors can comfortably manage two caves in a day, especially the shorter ones (Kateřinská Cave, the short route at Výpustek Cave). Three caves in one day is demanding, given the travel time between sites and the queues — it’s really only feasible with an early start and a well-planned route.
Which cave is the cheapest? Since 2026, Kateřinská Cave and Balcarka Cave have shared the same, lowest flat-rate admission (220/180/110 CZK). The cheapest single option overall, however, is the short route at Výpustek Cave (160/120/80 CZK).
Does the 20% multi-cave discount apply everywhere? Yes, except at Punkva Caves — it’s officially excluded from this discount. We’d therefore recommend visiting Punkva Caves first and using the discount for the remaining caves. See the combined price list for details.
Which cave is the least physically demanding? Kateřinská Cave — no stairs, no crawling, a level route throughout. It’s also suitable for visitors with reduced mobility (though do check current accessibility directly with the Czech Cave Administration before you travel).
Do I need to book tickets in advance? During peak season (April–October), especially at weekends, it’s worth booking ahead for all five caves — queues at the ticket office at Punkva Caves can mean waiting up to an hour.
