The Podvrší Lookout Tower has stood on the hill above Veselice near Blansko since 2001 — it’s 49 metres tall, with a covered viewing platform at a height of 32 metres, reached via 168 steel steps on a spiral staircase wrapped around a telecommunications mast. On a clear day, you can see the whole of the Moravian Karst Protected Landscape Area, the Drahany Highlands, and reportedly even the cooling towers of the Dukovany power plant.

Where the lookout tower stands

The tower sits on the summit of Podvrší (621 m above sea level) between the villages of Veselice and Vavřinec, roughly 8 km north of Skalní Mlýn. It’s a great choice for a day when you’ve already ticked off the caves and fancy something that doesn’t involve queuing or booking ahead — there’s no waiting to get in, you just climb the stairs.

Opening hours 2026

Admission is low (in the region of tens of Czech crowns — roughly 40 Kč (around €1.60); this is a rough guide only, exchange rates fluctuate); we’d recommend checking the current price directly by phone on +420 516 435 414 or +420 725 116 593, or by emailing [email protected].

What you can see from the top

In good visibility, the viewing platform offers a panorama over the entire Moravian Karst Protected Landscape Area, the Boskovice Furrow, and the Drahany Highlands. On the clearest days you can reportedly even make out the cooling towers of the Dukovany power station (over 50 km away) and the Pálava Hills near Mikulov — though don’t count on either, as these are exceptional conditions rather than the norm.

How to combine it with the caves

The lookout tower works nicely as an afternoon activity after visiting the caves, or as an alternative for days when you’d rather stay above ground — for instance, as a substitute for one of the spare days in our seven-day itinerary. It’s a short drive from both Blansko and Skalní Mlýn, though getting there on foot is more demanding due to the climb involved.
