Březina (population around 1,100) lies in a valley on the southern edge of the Moravian Karst, on the road from Brno to Jedovnice. For anyone driving out of Brno, it is the closest village in the Moravian Karst. At its heart stands the modern Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, whose foundation stone was blessed by John Paul II at Velehrad in 1990. From the village, the Eight Stops of Březina educational trail leads all the way to the Výpustek cave. For small children there is a shorter route, the Granny Březinka Trail, which is suitable for pushchairs. We found no accommodation in Březina itself; the nearest is in Křtiny.

Březina came into being in 1949 through the merger of two villages, Březina and Proseč. Both names suggest that the villages grew up on land cleared of forest. The first mentions of Březina date from the 14th century.

What to see

Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church

The modern church is the village’s landmark. Its foundation stone was blessed by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Velehrad in 1990. The church and its altar were consecrated in September 1995, and each year the anniversary of the consecration is marked with a pilgrimage celebration. If you have seen the Church of St Joseph in Senetářov or the chapel in Šošůvka, you can compare how churches were built in the region after 1989.

Malý lesík Cave

The cave lies on the slope of the hill Skalka, south of the village. Its entrance was dug out in 1949 by cavers led by A. Ševčík of Březina. Attention was drawn to it by a small opening in the rock through which a thrown stone fell into open space. Archaeologists found prehistoric pottery and a hearth here, which may date from the late Bronze Age or the early Iron Age. It is not open to the public, but an educational trail leads to it and there is a small car park by the entrance.

Jubilee monument

Near the village stands one of the monuments that Liechtenstein foresters built in 1898 to mark the 40th anniversary of the reign of Prince Johann II of Liechtenstein. Each one came with a grove of oaks. You will find a similar monument in the Říčka valley.

Fossils

In the youngest limestones around Březina, Mokrá and Křtiny, fossils of trilobites from the Devonian sea can be found. For more, see the article How the Moravian Karst Was Formed.
