In a single day from Brno (or as a stop along the way), you can comfortably manage the Punkva Caves with a boat trip, the Macocha Abyss for free, and lunch at Skalní Mlýn — plus Kateřinská Cave on top if you set off early. There’s just one key to success: book the Punkva Caves in advance, as tickets in high season often sell out by midday. In practice, the whole plan can also be done by train and bus.

If you’ve only got one day for the Moravian Karst, don’t try to see everything — the region has five caves, an abyss and dozens of kilometres of trails, and an over-packed schedule will only spoil your day. This plan sticks to a single base (Skalní Mlýn) and two sure things that work whatever the weather.
One-day timetable
9:00 — arrival and parking at Skalní Mlýn. In high season (April–October), try to arrive right at opening time, as the car park often fills up by midday at weekends. Parking costs 150–200 CZK (approx. €6–8 — this is a rough guide only, as exchange rates fluctuate) per day.
9:30 — the Punkva Caves. An hour-long tour ending with a boat trip along the underground River Punkva, all the way to the dry floor of the Macocha Abyss. Buy your tickets in advance — turning up on the day in high season is a gamble, as morning slots are often sold out by midday.
10:45 — the Macocha Abyss. Take the cable car (5–7 minutes, connecting straight on from the cave) or walk up. Make sure you visit both viewing platforms — Upper and Lower — as the view differs from each, and both are free of charge, no booking needed, all year round.
12:00 — lunch at Skalní Mlýn (see below).
13:00 — a second cave or a walk. If you’ve got time and energy left, hop on the tourist train back and head to Kateřinská Cave (roughly a 40-minute tour, no crawling involved, great for families), or walk the first kilometre of Pustý žleb — a peaceful stroll along the stream, away from the crowds.
15:00 — departure.
Can it be done without a car?
Yes. Take the train on the Brno–Česká Třebová line to Blansko station (the journey takes around 20–25 minutes, with services roughly every half hour), then bus no. 226 to Skalní Mlýn (about 10 minutes, running mainly in high season at weekends). The bus station is about 100 metres from the train station, so the change barely eats into your time. Bear in mind that travelling without a car will eat into your schedule with the journey there and back — it’s best to skip the second cave and focus on the Punkva Caves plus the Macocha Abyss.
Where to eat
Right at Skalní Mlýn there’s an on-site restaurant (serving both full meals and quick snacks), so there’s no need to go anywhere else — though expect a queue at the lunchtime peak in high season. An alternative is to stop off in Blansko on the way back, where you’ll find a wider choice of restaurants.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit in the Sloup-Šošůvka Caves or Balcarka too in a single day? Technically yes, but it means travelling between different locations (Sloup, Ostrov u Macochy), stretching the day out to 10+ hours without a break. For a single day, we’d recommend sticking to the Skalní Mlýn area.
What if the Punkva Caves are sold out? Try Kateřinská Cave as a substitute — it’s closer to the centre and booking tends to be less tight. The Macocha Abyss remains free and booking-free whatever happens.
Is a day trip worth it, or is it better to stay longer? A single day is enough for a taster of the main highlights. If you want to see more than two caves and also walk through Pustý žleb or the Josefov Valley, allow for anything from a weekend to a full week — see our complete seven-day itinerary.
